Minneriya is a small village located in the Polonnaruwa district of Sri Lanka. Due to its geological location and natural beauty, this area offers numerous attractions for both locals and foreign tourists.
Among these, the Minneriya reservoir holds a special place. It is a large reservoir built by King Mahasen in 286 AD. It has an area of about 19 square kilometers, spread over 456 acres.
Moreover, British scientist Ralph Banchaus stated in the 1820s that if this reservoir were completely renovated, all the areas centered around it could be supplied with water through it. Furthermore, a British governor, Henry Ward, has said that this reservoir is a wonderful creation of our ancestors.
The National Park located in the Minneriya area is another wonderful place that has attracted the attention of tourists. It was declared a National Park in 1997 and a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1938. Even during the dry season, the park has become a valuable place that provides water, food, and protection for elephants and other animals living in the surrounding districts.
The Minneriya National Park has become a home to both local and foreign animals, and it is home to twenty-four species of animals, sixteen species of birds, nine species of amphibians, twenty-five species of reptiles, twenty-six species of fish, and seventy-five species of butterflies. Among these, the rare and endangered Sri Lankan tiger and Sri Lankan sloth bear also reside in this park.
Minneriya is a unique place that cannot be missed by both domestic and foreign tourists, and they are eager to experience the natural beauty here.
