Sigiriya is a rock formation, located in Dambulla city in the Matale district of the central province Sri Lanka. It has been recognized as a world heritage by UNESCO. It is an approximately 590 feet high rock with historical and archeological values.
This Sigiriya rock is a masterpiece created by King Kashyapa who lived in the 4th century. He has selected this rock cave monastery as his palace and has decorated it with astonishing wall art including mind-blowing architectures. Basement of the rock and the surrounding garden is adorned with ornamental ponds and water flowers. On the way to the top with the steep stone staircase, there are many hidden mysterious rock caves. Which were used by enlightened monks during king Kashyapa’s ruling period.
The basement of the palace on the top of the rock and the giant lion’s feet structure at the entrance are still to be seen. The water pond on the top of the rock is riddled with many mysteries such as how the water was brought to the top pool.
